Ogor Mawtribes Army Set: Is It a Good Way to Start the Army?
Ogor Mawtribes Army Set: Is It a Good Way to Start the Army?
The new Ogor Mawtribes Army Set is one of the biggest refreshes the faction has received in years.
Games Workshop has not simply repackaged an assortment of older Ogor kits. The box is built around newly redesigned versions of some of the faction's most recognizable units, alongside the new Battletome: Ogor Mawtribes and warscroll cards.
That immediately makes it interesting to both completely new Age of Sigmar players and existing Ogor collectors.
But an Army Set can be a good bundle without necessarily being the best place to start an army.
So the real question is:
Is the 2026 Ogor Mawtribes Army Set actually a good starting point?
In this case, we think the answer is yes—especially if the classic Gutbuster side of Ogor Mawtribes is what attracted you to the army in the first place.
The Ogor Mawtribes Army Set is a strong starting point because it gives you a Tyrant, 10 Ogor Gluttons, three Ironguts, two Maulbeast Cavalry, the new Battletome, and warscroll cards in one package.
More importantly, these are not filler units. Gluttons and Ironguts form the recognizable core of an Ogor army, the Tyrant gives you a leader, and Maulbeast Cavalry adds speed that a foot-heavy force would otherwise lack.

What Comes in the Ogor Mawtribes Army Set?
The 2026 Army Set contains a compact but useful collection of new Ogor miniatures.
| Contents | Quantity | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Tyrant | 1 | Army leader / melee Hero |
| Ogor Gluttons | 10 | Mainline infantry |
| Ironguts | 3 | Elite heavy infantry |
| Maulbeast Cavalry | 2 | Fast mounted threat |
| Battletome: Ogor Mawtribes | 1 | Faction rules, lore, warscrolls and army-building material |
| Warscroll Cards | Set | Quick tabletop rules reference |
The Army Set contains the redesigned versions of several fundamental Ogor units rather than loading the box with niche support pieces.
Is the Ogor Mawtribes Army Set Good for Beginners?
Yes.
There are three main reasons.
1. You Get a Functional Core
Gluttons and Ironguts are exactly the sort of units you expect when imagining an Ogor Mawtribes army.
You are starting with:
- A leader
- Core infantry
- Elite infantry
- Fast cavalry
That immediately gives you more variety than a starter box consisting almost entirely of one troop type.
2. The Army Has a Clear Play Style
The new Ogor Mawtribes rules continue to emphasize a direct identity: the faction is elite, mobile for its size, and designed to hit very hard once it reaches combat. The new Eat 'Em Alive mechanic rewards aggressive play and gives the army ongoing benefits after winning combats.
That makes the faction relatively easy to understand conceptually.
You are not beginning with an army requiring dozens of fragile support pieces and complicated formations before it starts functioning.
3. The Battletome Is Included
New players need the faction rules anyway.
Including the battletome removes another immediate purchase from the startup process.
What Do Ogor Mawtribes Play Like?
Ogor Mawtribes occupy an interesting space in Age of Sigmar.
They are generally an elite army, meaning you can put a threatening force onto the battlefield without painting enormous numbers of infantry.
Expect Ogors to Focus On:
- Powerful melee attacks
- Durable multi-wound models
- Aggressive movement
- Charging
- Controlling space through large bases and dangerous units
- Monsters and cavalry depending on the build
The new battletome adds more nuance beneath that straightforward identity, with positioning, activation order, and the timing of faction abilities becoming increasingly important as players learn the army.
An Ogor army usually asks you to paint fewer individual models than many horde armies. If the idea of painting 80–100 infantry models is stopping you from starting Age of Sigmar, Ogors may be a much better fit.
The New Ogor Gluttons Are the Real Foundation
The 10 Ogor Gluttons are arguably the most important part of the Army Set.
Gluttons represent the classic Ogor infantry concept: enormous warriors charging directly toward the enemy with heavy melee weapons and an even heavier appetite.
Why Gluttons Are Good in a Starter
- They establish the army's visual identity.
- They provide substantial board presence.
- They are useful beyond your first games.
- They give new painters plenty of room to practise skin, metal, cloth, and leather.
The redesigned kit is also important for existing players because the 2026 refresh modernizes one of the faction's longest-standing core units.
Are the New Ironguts Good for a Starting Army?
The three Ironguts give the box a more elite melee element.
Visually and thematically, these are the Ogors you send toward something that really needs to disappear.
Why They Improve the Box
If the Army Set contained only a Tyrant and a large pile of Gluttons, the collection would feel fairly one-dimensional.
Ironguts create another combat profile and give you a natural elite unit to build around.
For New Players
They are also useful for learning one of the basic principles of list building:
Not every unit in your army needs to do the same job.
Maulbeast Cavalry Adds Something the Army Really Needs: Speed
The two Maulbeast Cavalry are probably the most interesting inclusion in terms of list variety.
Large foot Ogors already hit hard.
What cavalry adds is the ability to project a threat into areas your infantry may not reach as quickly.
Maulbeast Cavalry Can Help With:
- Flanking
- Pressure on distant objectives
- Threatening vulnerable enemy units
- Supporting slower infantry
- Forcing opponents to respect multiple areas of the board
The new battletome includes a Regiment of Renown built around a Tyrant on Glutthorn and two Maulbeast Cavalry, with rules allowing the group to arrive from a battlefield edge as a flanking force — which gives a clear picture of the battlefield identity Games Workshop has in mind for them.
What About the Tyrant?
The included Tyrant gives the force an immediate commander.
This is another reason the Army Set works well for someone starting from nothing.
You do not open the box and immediately discover that you still need to purchase a separate Hero before your collection resembles an army.
The Tyrant Fits the Classic Ogor Fantasy
- Large
- Brutal
- Heavily armed
- Designed to lead from the front
If your idea of an Ogor general is a giant warlord personally smashing through enemy units, the Tyrant fits naturally.
The Battletome Makes the Army Set More Valuable
The included Battletome: Ogor Mawtribes is more important than it may initially appear.
It contains the updated faction rules, warscrolls, background lore, army-building options, spell material, and other rules needed to properly explore the army.
The Army Set version also uses a unique alternate cover exclusive to the box.
The New Battletome Also Introduces:
- Updated army rules
- New units
- Mawseekers
- Three Armies of Renown
- New Regiments of Renown
- Additional army-building options
The battletome's three Armies of Renown are the Meatfist Mawtribe, Beastclaw Alfrostun, and Mawseeker Gollop, each supporting a distinctly different style of Ogor collection.
Who Is the Army Set Best For?
| Player | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Completely New Ogor Player | Excellent | Core units + leader + battletome in one box |
| New Age of Sigmar Player | Very Good | Lower model count and clear army identity |
| Existing Ogor Player With Older Models | Very Good | Access to multiple redesigned core kits |
| Beastclaw Raiders-Focused Player | Mixed | The box is mainly focused on foot Ogors and Maulbeasts rather than Stonehorn/Thundertusk armies |
| Mawseeker-Focused Player | Good Foundation | The battletome supports the theme, but more dedicated Mawseeker units will be required |
| Player Who Already Owns Lots of Gluttons | Depends | Value depends on how badly you want the refreshed sculpts and other new units |
Who Should Skip the Ogor Mawtribes Army Set?
The box is good, but it is not automatically ideal for every Ogor player.
You May Want to Skip It If:
- You already own enough Gluttons and Ironguts and do not care about the refreshed models.
- You are primarily interested in Stonehorns and Thundertusks.
- You want to build almost entirely around Mawseekers.
- You only need the battletome.
- You dislike the classic Gutbuster side of the faction.
This is primarily a classic Ogor infantry starter. It is excellent for that purpose, but Ogor Mawtribes now support several different directions.
What Are the Main Ways to Build Ogor Mawtribes in 2026?
The new battletome gives players several distinct directions.
Classic Gutbuster Army
Focus on:
- Gluttons
- Ironguts
- Tyrants
- Butchers
- Supporting units
The Army Set is excellent for this.
Beastclaw Army
Focus more heavily on:
- Stonehorns
- Thundertusks
- Mournfang
- Mounted Ogors
The battletome includes the Beastclaw Alfrostun Army of Renown for players wanting to lean into this side of the faction.
The Army Set can contribute, but it is not the most direct route.
Mawseeker Army
The 2026 range introduces a new subset of Ogor society known as Mawseekers, led by Redd the Maw. Players can add Cleavers, Gutseers, and other Mawseeker-themed models to push the collection in this direction.
The Army Set gives you the rules and a useful core, but it is not a complete Mawseeker army by itself.
What Should You Buy After the Army Set?
This is where the set becomes particularly useful.
Because it already covers infantry, elite infantry, cavalry, and a Hero, your next purchase can be based on the direction you want the army to take.
Option 1: Add a Butcher
A Butcher gives you magical support and adds another important part of classic Ogor army identity.
This is one of the first additions we would consider for a balanced collection.
Option 2: Add More Ironguts
If you like the elite melee side of the army, reinforcing your Ironguts is a straightforward expansion.
Games Workshop released the new Glutton and Irongut kits separately following the Army Set launch.
Option 3: Add a Big Monster
Few things say Ogor Mawtribes quite like a Stonehorn or Thundertusk.
Adding a large monster gives the collection:
- A major centrepiece
- Another battlefield threat
- A completely different painting project
Option 4: Explore the Mawseekers
Games Workshop's wider 2026 release added new Mawseeker units and characters, giving players a new direction beyond rebuilding the classic range.
Option 5: Add Morga the Mighty / Tyrant on Glutthorn
The new Morga the Mighty kit can alternatively be built as a Tyrant on Glutthorn, providing a much larger mounted Hero option.
This can make an excellent later centrepiece once your basic force is established.

Are Ogor Mawtribes Expensive to Collect?
One of the nice things about Ogors is that the individual models are large, which usually means an army needs fewer bodies than a true horde faction.
That does not automatically make Ogors cheap—large monsters and characters can still add up—but you generally avoid the requirement to assemble and paint massive numbers of infantry.
That Can Save You:
- Painting time
- Storage space
- Transportation space
- Assembly time
For someone who likes the visual impact of a large fantasy army but does not want to paint 100 miniatures, Ogors are worth serious consideration.
Are Ogor Mawtribes Easy to Paint?
We would rate them as fairly beginner friendly.
The models are large, which gives you plenty of room to work.
You Will Practise:
- Skin
- Leather
- Metal
- Cloth
- Fur
- Wood
- Weathering
Why the Large Models Help
Details are generally easier to access than on extremely small infantry.
Ogor skin also works well with:
- Washes
- Contrast-style paints
- Speedpaints
- Layering

What Colours Do You Need for Ogor Mawtribes?
You can paint Ogors however you want, but a basic traditional palette might include:
- Skin tone
- Skin shade
- Brown
- Dark brown
- Bone
- Silver
- Rust or orange-brown
- Black
- Off-white
- One or two colours for cloth
Optional Effects
- Blood
- Mud
- Rust
- Grime
- Snow for Beastclaw themes
Ogors look particularly good with weathered equipment. Their weapons and armour do not need to look factory-new.
Is the Ogor Mawtribes Army Set Better Than Starting With Individual Boxes?
For a new player, generally yes.
Army Set Advantages
- Multiple unit types immediately
- Battletome included
- Warscroll cards included
- Exclusive battletome cover
- Strong core for expansion
Individual Boxes Are Better If:
- You already own the battletome.
- You only want one specific army build.
- You want Beastclaw almost exclusively.
- You have a large older Ogor collection.
Is This Better for New Players or Existing Ogor Players?
Interestingly, both.
For New Players
You receive most of what you need to establish the core of the army.
For Existing Players
You receive modernized versions of:
- Tyrant
- Gluttons
- Ironguts
plus the completely new Maulbeast Cavalry.
That makes it more attractive than an Army Set built entirely around models veterans already own.
Should You Buy Two Ogor Mawtribes Army Sets?
For most beginners, no—not immediately.
The first box already contains 10 Gluttons.
Before doubling everything, build the set and play some games.
Buy a Second Only If:
- You know you want more Gluttons.
- You want additional Ironguts.
- You want another pair of Maulbeast Cavalry.
- The bundle makes financial sense compared with separate kits.
- You have a use for the duplicate battletome.
Buy one Army Set, build it, play it, then use your second purchase to add something the first box does not contain.
Should You Start Ogor Mawtribes in 2026?
There is a particularly strong argument for starting now.
The army has just received:
- A new battletome
- New core miniatures
- New characters
- New cavalry
- New Mawseeker units
- New Armies of Renown
That means you are entering immediately after a significant range refresh rather than immediately before one.
Games Workshop followed the Army Set with individual releases for characters, Gluttons, Ironguts, Mawseeker infantry, and other new units in August 2026.
Ogor Mawtribes vs Other Beginner Age of Sigmar Armies
| Army | Model Count | Style | Beginner Appeal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ogor Mawtribes | Low–Medium | Elite melee / monsters | Excellent if you like aggressive armies |
| Stormcast Eternals | Low–Medium | Elite combined arms | Very beginner friendly |
| Skaven | Medium–High | Hordes / machines / monsters | Excellent range but more models |
| Gloomspite Gitz | Variable | Hordes / monsters / squigs | Huge variety but potentially larger armies |
| Sons of Behemat | Very Low | Giant monsters | Very few models, but highly specialized |
If you want an army that sits between conventional infantry forces and giant-monster collections, Ogors occupy a very appealing middle ground.
What We Like About the Army Set
1. Almost Everything Is Useful
There is little obvious filler.
2. The New Sculpts Matter
Gluttons, Ironguts, and the Tyrant were all important parts of the range to modernize.
3. Maulbeast Cavalry Adds Variety
You are not starting with nothing but infantry.
4. The Battletome Is Included
One fewer essential purchase.
5. It Is Easy to Expand
Monsters, magic, Mawseekers, more infantry, and mounted characters all provide obvious next steps.
What We Do Not Like as Much
1. It Is Not a Complete Beastclaw Starter
If giant monsters are why you want Ogors, the Army Set points you in a different direction.
2. Existing Players May Already Own Similar Units
Veterans with large Glutton and Irongut collections need to decide how much the refreshed sculpts matter to them.
3. The Included Battletome Reduces the Value of Buying Multiples
A second Army Set means another copy of a book you probably do not need.
4. Three Ironguts Is an Awkward Number
Depending on how unit sizes are structured in the new battletome, three Ironguts may leave you wanting a fourth relatively quickly. It is worth checking optimal unit sizes before deciding whether to pick up a second set or a separate Ironguts kit alongside the Army Set.
