History of Akagi
Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi began life as an Amagi-class battlecruiser before the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty led to her conversion into an aircraft carrier. Extensively rebuilt during the 1930s, Akagi became one of Japan's premier carrier strike platforms.
As flagship of the First Air Fleet, Akagi participated in many of Japan's early wartime successes, including the attack on Attack on Pearl Harbor, operations against Rabaul, the bombing of Darwin, and the Indian Ocean Raid. Her career ended during the pivotal Battle of Midway in June 1942, where she was critically damaged by American dive bombers and later scuttled by Japanese destroyers. The loss of Akagi and three other fleet carriers marked a turning point in the Pacific War.
