Wargames Atlantic: Late Roman Legionaries (2) – Lorica Squamata

Build the armies of the Later Roman Empire with Wargames Atlantic Late Roman Legionaries (2): Lorica Squamata. This multi-part hard plastic miniature set represents Roman infantry equipped with distinctive scale armor, providing a versatile foundation for Late Roman forces and other armies of Late Antiquity.

As the Roman military evolved, its soldiers fought across an enormous frontier against rival empires, migrating peoples, raiders, and internal challengers. Lorica squamata, constructed from overlapping metal scales, was one of several forms of armor used during the Roman period and gives these miniatures a distinctive appearance on the tabletop.

What Is Lorica Squamata?

Lorica squamata is a form of scale armor constructed from numerous small metal plates attached in overlapping rows.

Scale armor was used by Roman troops across a lengthy period and continued to appear during Late Antiquity alongside other forms of military protection.

Its distinctive layered appearance makes these Legionaries immediately stand apart from troops wearing mail or other armor styles, while providing additional visual variety within a larger Roman army.

Build a Late Roman Army

These Legionaries can form part of armies representing the Roman Empire during the turbulent period between the late 3rd and 5th centuries.

They are ideal for forces and scenarios involving:

  • Late Roman field armies
  • Frontier warfare
  • Civil wars
  • Germanic invasions
  • Wars against the Sasanian Empire
  • Defense of Roman territories
  • Late Antiquity campaigns
  • Historical-fantasy settings

Combine them with additional Wargames Atlantic Late Roman infantry and cavalry to create a larger and more varied army.

Why Add Lorica Squamata Legionaries?

Distinctive Roman Infantry

Scale armor provides a recognizable alternative to other Late Roman troop types and adds visual variety to infantry formations.

Multi-Part Hard Plastic

The plastic construction makes the kit well suited to customization, conversions, and larger army-building projects.

Excellent Historical Range

The Decline and Fall setting covers one of the most dramatic periods of Roman history, providing plenty of inspiration for campaigns and opposing armies.

Great Painting Project

Scale armor, shields, weapons, clothing, and equipment provide plenty of opportunities for metallic effects, shield designs, weathering, and historically inspired color schemes.
