The Carolingian Franks

The Carolingian Empire was one of the most influential powers in early medieval Europe.

Under Charlemagne, the empire expanded across much of Western and Central Europe, reshaping the political and military landscape of the continent.

Charlemagne was crowned Emperor in 800 AD, marking an important moment in European medieval history.

Carolingian armies relied heavily on infantry, with warriors gathering around their lords and fighting in closely organized formations.

These miniatures recreate the appearance of those early medieval soldiers, providing an excellent foundation for a historically themed Frankish army.

Carolingian Infantry

Carolingian infantry formed the backbone of Frankish military forces during much of the early medieval period.

Warriors often fought in dense formations, gathering around their leaders and using shields and spears to resist enemy attacks.

Their battlefield tactics shared similarities with those of contemporary Saxon and Viking forces.

The infantry remained an important component of Carolingian armies even as contact with mounted peoples, including the Avars, encouraged greater reliance on cavalry.

Shield Wall Formations

The Carolingian Franks Unarmoured Infantry are ideal for representing tightly packed shield walls.

Use the included shields and spears to create formations suitable for:

  • Defensive battles

  • Shield wall engagements

  • Infantry clashes

  • Village raids

  • Open-field battles

  • Historical campaigns

  • Dark Age skirmishes

The variety of poses and equipment allows builders to create units that appear organized without every miniature looking identical.

Extensive Weapon Options

Each sprue includes a large selection of weapons, giving hobbyists flexibility when assembling their warriors.

Weapon options include:

  • Spears

  • Swords

  • Axes

  • Seaxes

  • Wooden clubs

The spears include examples featuring the distinctive Carolingian cross guard beneath the spearhead.

This detail helps distinguish the models from other early medieval infantry ranges.

Convex Carolingian Shields

Each sprue contains 6 convex Carolingian shields with embossed details.

These shields provide a recognizable defensive appearance while offering opportunities for painting historical patterns, colors, and decorative designs.

The shields can also be swapped with compatible Victrix models to create additional variation across your army.

Multiple Head Options

Each sprue contains 17 head options, including:

  • 8 bare heads

  • 2 heads wearing caps

  • 7 helmeted heads

The variety allows builders to create warriors with different appearances, from lightly equipped infantrymen to soldiers wearing distinctive Carolingian helmets.

Distinctive Carolingian Helmets

The kit includes several helmet styles inspired by historical sources and contemporary artwork.

Some designs resemble the unusual helmets depicted in Carolingian manuscripts, including forms that appear similar to the much later Renaissance Morion.

Historians continue to debate whether these helmets accurately represent equipment used during the period or reflect artistic interpretations of earlier Roman designs.

The kit includes alternative helmet options, allowing builders to choose the appearance that best suits their preferred historical interpretation.

Cloaks & Clothing

Carolingian warriors commonly wore long-sleeved tunics, often decorated with contrasting borders.

Cloaks, leg bindings, and distinctive footwear were also part of their appearance.

The kit includes 4 cloak options per sprue, featuring flowing and draped designs that add movement and variety to the completed miniatures.

These components are particularly useful for creating distinctive warriors and command figures.

Command Figure Options

Each sprue includes horn and standard bearer arms, allowing builders to create command figures within their infantry formations.

These components are useful for representing:

  • Standard bearers

  • Horn blowers

  • Unit leaders

  • Command groups

They also provide additional variety for larger infantry units.

Compatible With Other Victrix Dark Age Miniatures

The Carolingian Franks can be mixed with compatible Victrix ranges, particularly through shield swaps and conversions.

Suitable companion ranges include:

  • Victrix Saxons

  • Victrix Vikings

  • Victrix Normans

This flexibility makes the kit useful for hobbyists building larger Dark Age armies with varied equipment and appearances.

Great for Fantasy Armies

Beyond historical wargaming, these miniatures are also suitable for fantasy tabletop games.

Their shields, spears, cloaks, and traditional weapons make them useful for creating:

  • Human infantry

  • Militia

  • Town guards

  • Medieval warriors

  • Fantasy soldiers

  • Custom regiment conversions

The extensive selection of interchangeable components makes the set particularly appealing for kitbashing projects.

Excellent Painting Project

With 36 miniatures and numerous equipment options, this kit provides a substantial painting project.

Experiment with:

  • Carolingian shield patterns

  • Tunic colors

  • Decorative clothing borders

  • Leather equipment

  • Wooden shields

  • Spears and axes

  • Metallic helmets

  • Cloaks

  • Leg bindings

  • Historical basing

Varying clothing colors and shield designs can help create a natural-looking infantry formation while maintaining a cohesive army appearance.
