They are usually associated with death, decay, and the manipulation of life force. In many stories, defeating a lich requires a heroic quest to destroy its phylactery, an object that anchors its soul to the mortal realm and grants it immortality. Without destroying the phylactery, a lich can reform its physical form even if destroyed.
