The Macedonian Royal Guard, especially prominent under King Alexander the Great, was a prestigious unit known as the "Hypaspists." These guards were elite soldiers tasked with protecting the king and acting as a rapid-response force.

The Royal Guard consisted of three thousand Hypaspists, divided into three battalions. The most elite battalion was called the "Agema," serving directly under Alexander and often positioned on the right flank, considered the most honorable and vulnerable. These guardsmen were chosen for their loyalty, physical prowess, and combat skill.

In battle, they fought as heavy infantry, equipped with spears or sarissas (long pikes) and round shields. Their armor varied but often included a breastplate, greaves, and a helmet. As shock troops, they played a crucial role in phalanx warfare, breaking enemy lines with their tight formations and precise maneuvers.

Outside of battle, the Royal Guard accompanied Alexander on his campaigns and ensured his safety. They were entrusted with sensitive missions and served as his eyes and ears, providing intelligence and advice. Their training, discipline, and unwavering loyalty made them one of the most formidable units in Alexander's formidable army.
