Flames of War German Sturer Emil Tank-hunter Platoon (2x)

Extreme Long-Range Anti-Tank Firepower for Late-War German Forces

Historical Background:

The Sturer Emil, officially designated as the 12.8 cm Selbstfahrlafette L/61, was a German experimental tank destroyer built on a lengthened chassis of the VK 30.01(H) heavy tank prototype. Only two vehicles were ever produced, and they were sent to the Eastern Front where they saw combat with the 521st Heavy Tank-Hunter Battalion. Armed with a powerful 12.8cm gun, the Sturer Emil could destroy enemy armour at extreme ranges, making it one of the most heavily armed vehicles of its time. Its open-topped design and slow speed limited its survivability, but its kill records were impressive—one of the two prototypes reportedly knocked out over 20 Soviet tanks before being lost. These rare machines became legendary for their raw firepower and served as early steps in Germany’s development of super-heavy anti-tank vehicles.

The 12.8 cm Selbstfahrlafette L/61 (12.8cm L/61 Self-propelled Mounting) or Panzerselbstlafette V (Armoured Self-propelled Mounting Mark 5) was armed with a huge Rheinmetall 12.8 cm gun based on the gigantic 12.8 cm FlaK 40. With such cumbersome designations, it quickly gained the unofficial nickname of ‘Sturer Emil’ (Stubborn Emil). The two vehicles were named Max and Moritz after the naughty boys in Busch’s famous German children’s tale.
