The Hornisse and Hummel were both key self-propelled artillery platforms used by the German Wehrmacht during the latter years of World War II. The Hornisse (also known as the Nashorn) mounted the powerful 8.8cm Pak 43 anti-tank gun on a light, open-topped chassis. It was designed to destroy enemy armour at extreme ranges and proved especially effective on the Eastern Front. The Hummel, in contrast, was armed with a 15cm howitzer and served as mobile artillery support. It provided crucial indirect firepower to German mechanized divisions, combining mobility with destructive firepower to support infantry and tanks alike. Together, these vehicles exemplified Germany’s reliance on specialized platforms to counter the growing Allied advantage in numbers.
