Flames of War Eastern Front Starter Set – Kursk
Recreate the massive armored clashes of the Eastern Front with the Flames of War: Kursk Complete World War II Starter Set. In the summer of 1943, Germany launched Operation Citadel, an ambitious offensive intended to eliminate the enormous Soviet salient surrounding Kursk. New weapons, including the formidable Panther tank, were rushed into action as German armored formations prepared to break through deeply prepared Soviet defenses.
Waiting for them was an enormous concentration of Soviet troops and armor. Thousands of tanks would take part in the wider campaign, creating some of the largest armored engagements of the war.

The Battle of Kursk
Following the muddy Russian spring, German forces prepared for a major summer offensive.
The target was the enormous Soviet salient surrounding Kursk.
Operation Citadel was intended to attack the salient from multiple directions, surround the Soviet armies within it, and restore German momentum on the Eastern Front.
To accomplish this, Germany assembled a formidable armored force incorporating both established Panzer formations and newly introduced equipment.
German Forces
German armored formations entered the Kursk offensive with approximately 2,450 tanks and assault guns committed across the operation.
Among the equipment rushed to the battlefield were the new Panther tanks, intended to provide German formations with increased firepower and armor protection.
Players commanding the German force can recreate the attacking side of the campaign and then expand their collection with additional Flames of War German units.
Soviet Forces
The Red Army knew a major German attack was coming.
Rather than being caught unprepared, Soviet commanders constructed extensive defensive positions and assembled enormous reserves of troops, artillery, and armored vehicles.
More than 3,600 Soviet tanks and self-propelled guns were available across the wider Kursk campaign, setting the stage for an extraordinary concentration of armored warfare.
The Soviet force included in this Starter Set provides a foundation for building a larger Red Army collection.
