D&D Nolzur's Marvelous Unpainted Miniatures: Chuul

Often encountered in the service of powerful aboleths, Chuuls make excellent enemies for underwater adventures, coastal encounters, forgotten ruins, and campaigns involving eldritch creatures.

Like other miniatures in the Nolzur's Marvelous Unpainted range, the Chuul comes pre-primed and ready for painting, with deeply sculpted details designed to make individual textures easier to pick out with a brush.

The Chuul

Chuuls are ancient amphibious creatures whose origins and motivations can be as mysterious as the strange masters they often serve.

Their heavily armored bodies and enormous pincers make them dangerous opponents even for experienced adventuring parties.

A Chuul can lurk beneath the surface of dark water before suddenly emerging to attack, making it particularly effective in encounters where players can't easily see what they're facing.

Servants of Aboleths

Chuuls are frequently associated with the sinister aboleths, ancient aquatic beings whose schemes can span generations.

This makes a Chuul an excellent creature for adventures involving:

  • Aboleths

  • Eldritch horrors

  • Sunken cities

  • Ancient civilizations

  • Underwater temples

  • Forgotten gods

  • Aquatic cults

  • Mysterious ruins

Use the creature as a guardian, hunter, or indication that something even more dangerous is nearby.

Aquatic Encounters

The Chuul fits naturally into environments where adventurers must deal with water and limited visibility.

Use it in:

  • Swamps

  • Underground lakes

  • Sewers

  • Coastal caves

  • Flooded dungeons

  • Shipwrecks

  • Underwater ruins

  • Ancient reservoirs

  • Subterranean rivers

Its unusual appearance can also make it useful as a homebrew monster in science-fantasy or horror-themed campaigns.

A Dangerous Tabletop Foe

The creature's large claws and monstrous silhouette give players an immediate visual indication that they've encountered something dangerous.

Use the miniature as:

  • A major encounter

  • A dungeon guardian

  • An aboleth servant

  • An aquatic ambusher

  • A wandering monster

  • A boss creature

  • Part of a larger monster encounter

Its 50mm base also gives the model plenty of tabletop presence.

Pre-Primed for Painting

The miniature comes pre-primed, allowing hobbyists to move quickly into the painting stage.

Deeply sculpted details are well suited to techniques such as:

  • Base coating

  • Washing

  • Drybrushing

  • Layering

  • Highlighting

  • Glazing

  • Contrast-style painting

Some translucent components may remain unprimed to preserve their transparent appearance.

Excellent Painting Project

The Chuul's combination of shell, claws, limbs, and aquatic features provides plenty of opportunities for creative painting.

Try techniques for:

  • Crustacean shells

  • Claws

  • Wet skin

  • Chitin

  • Underwater colors

  • Natural camouflage

  • Gloss effects

  • Slime

  • Eldritch coloration

  • Weathered shell textures

Color schemes can range from realistic crustacean tones to bright, alien colors suited to an eldritch monster.

50mm Clear Plastic Base

The set includes 1 50mm clear plastic base.

The transparent base allows the finished Chuul to blend naturally with a variety of dungeon maps, aquatic gaming mats, and terrain layouts.
