About the Vehicle
In late 1944, German forces attempted a bold deception during the Battle of the Bulge. As part of Operation Greif, several German vehicles were disguised to resemble Allied equipment in order to infiltrate enemy lines and cause confusion behind the front.
One of the most unusual results of this effort was the Panther tank modified to resemble the American M10 tank destroyer. Known as the Ersatz M10, these Panthers were fitted with sheet metal alterations to change the silhouette of the turret and hull in an attempt to pass as U.S. vehicles at a distance. Although the disguise would not stand up to close inspection, it was intended to help German units approach Allied positions before revealing their true identity.
Only a small number of these modified vehicles were produced, making them one of the more unusual armored vehicles fielded during the war.
