Victory at Sea: German Prinz Eugen
The Prinz Eugen was a heavy cruiser of the Kriegsmarine, best known for its role in Operation Rheinübung alongside the battleship Bismarck. Commissioned in 1940, this Admiral Hipper-class cruiser was designed for long-range operations, commerce raiding, and fleet support, boasting formidable firepower, speed, and armor.
Prinz Eugen gained infamy during May 1941, when it participated in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, where it, along with Bismarck, engaged the Royal Navy's HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales. During the battle, HMS Hood was destroyed, and Prinz Eugen successfully maneuvered to evade further damage. Later in the war, the ship took part in various escort missions and engagements, including the Baltic Sea operations, before being surrendered to the United States in 1945 and later used for nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll.
