Victory at Sea: German Heavy Cruiser Blücher
The Blücher, a heavy cruiser of the Admiral Hipper-class, was named after Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, the Prussian general famed for his role in the Battle of Waterloo. Commissioned shortly after World War II began, she was assigned as the flagship of Konteradmiral Oskar Kummetz, leading the naval flotilla tasked with capturing Oslo during the invasion of Norway (Operation Weserübung) in April 1940.
During the operation, Blücher was struck multiple times by Norwegian 28cm coastal guns at close range and was later hit by two torpedoes launched from land-based batteries. The devastating damage caused raging fires, which spread to the ship's ammunition magazines and fuel bunkers, leading to massive internal explosions. She ultimately sank in the Oslofjord, where her wreck remains to this day. It has since been designated as a war memorial to protect it from looting.
