Victory at Sea: Royal Navy HMS Dido
The HMS Dido, a Dido-class light cruiser, played a pivotal role in World War II, serving across multiple theaters of war. Initially deployed to escort the HMS Furious on a mission to West Africa, she later transitioned to crucial convoy escort duties in the Atlantic. In 1941, she joined the Mediterranean fleet, participating in the evacuation of British forces from Crete, where she sustained heavy damage.
After undergoing extensive repairs in Brooklyn, New York, she returned to action, patrolling the Eastern Mediterranean and later shifting to the Western Mediterranean to support the Normandy landings in 1944. As the war drew to a close, HMS Dido was dispatched to Copenhagen, where she accepted the surrender of the Kriegsmarine. Notably, she is credited with firing the final naval shot of WWII in Europe.
