Warmachine – Mercenaries Faction Overview

The Mercenaries of Warmachine bring a diverse array of units, warjacks, and characters for hire across the Iron Kingdoms. Whether you're looking to field a full Mercenary army or add freelance support to other factions, Mercs offer unmatched flexibility and characterful options. From pirate crews to dwarven engineers and ruthless sell-swords, Mercenaries bring cunning and firepower to any battlefield.

Mercenaries are a unique Warmachine faction composed of diverse sub-groups and characters who fight for coin rather than cause. They include pirates, dwarves, alchemists, assassins, and more. Some Mercenary units can join other factions, while others can be fielded in pure Mercenary armies led by their own warcasters.

Yes. One of the key appeals of the Mercenaries faction is their ability to be included in other Warmachine armies. Many Merc units are designated as “partisan” or “friendly” to specific factions, allowing them to support larger forces with specialized skills or utility. Always check faction legality in the model rules.

Mercenaries include several sub-factions such as the Highborn Covenant, Four Star Syndicate, Talion Charter (pirates), and the Steelhead Mercenary Company. Each has its own theme force options, synergies, and unique characters, allowing players to build thematically distinct armies within the Merc umbrella.

Yes. Mercenary warcasters like Gorten Grundback, Ashlynn d’Elyse, Magnus the Traitor, and Fiona the Black offer competitive playstyles ranging from heavy control to assassination and attrition. Their spell lists and feats are versatile, allowing Merc players to adapt to a wide range of opponents and missions.

Mercenary warjacks include rugged models like the Nomad, Mule, Rover, and Mangler. While often less advanced than faction-specific jacks, Merc jacks are cost-efficient and adaptable. Many warcasters have their own character warjacks with special rules and synergies unique to their command style.

Mercenaries can be rewarding for both new and veteran players. While their diverse options may seem overwhelming at first, their ability to field different styles of lists and plug into other armies makes them an excellent toolbox faction. Starting with a theme force like Steelheads or Talion Charter is a good entry point.

Mercenary miniatures are available through Privateer Press and many hobby retailers. You can often find them in both plastic and metal formats, with some available in discounted army bundles or legacy collections. Pre-owned models can also be a great way to start your Mercenary force affordably.
