Panel lining is the process of adding dark ink or paint to the grooves and details of a Gundam model to make them stand out. It adds depth and realism to the kit. Most builders use panel line markers, enamel washes, or ultra-fine paintbrushes. Popular tools include the Gundam Marker GM01 (black), Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color, and pre-thinned washes applied with capillary action. Be sure to seal your panel lines with topcoat to preserve the finish.

No, painting is optional. Most Bandai Gundam kits are color-molded and look great straight out of the box. However, painting can elevate your kit by improving color accuracy, adding weathering effects, and customizing your design. Beginners often start with panel lining and decals before experimenting with full painting. Using topcoat (matte, gloss, or semi-gloss) is a good first step into customization.

Most Gundam kits are snap-fit and don't require glue, but for customizing or reinforcing parts, plastic cement or model glue is ideal. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement is a favorite for bonding polystyrene parts and can be applied precisely with its built-in brush. Super glue (cyanoacrylate) can also be used for resin parts, metal accessories, or repairing breaks, but it’s not recommended for large plastic surfaces.

Yes, topcoat is a common finishing step that protects decals, panel lining, and paint while giving your model a consistent surface finish. It comes in matte, gloss, and semi-gloss varieties. Spray topcoats are the easiest to apply and are available from brands like Mr. Hobby and Tamiya. Always apply topcoat in thin layers and in a well-ventilated area. Be sure to test compatibility with any markers or paints you’ve used.
