Adaptation through necessity—Japan’s answer to mobile fire support.
Due to limited industrial capacity and resources, Japan’s armed forces relied heavily on modified designs rather than purpose-built vehicles. The Type 1 Ho-Ni I was one such adaptation—mounting a powerful 75mm Type 90 field gun in an open-top fighting compartment on the reliable Chi-Ha chassis. Designed to operate both as a mobile anti-tank platform and indirect fire artillery, it offered armored divisions much-needed versatility in firepower.

Functionally similar to Germany’s Marder series, the Ho-Ni I brought greater fire support to the battlefield while remaining cost-effective to produce. Deployed by Japanese armored divisions, these vehicles were used in both direct and support roles throughout the Pacific campaigns.
