Aspirant Polemarchs are primarily raised within the confines of the Scholae and are chosen from the masses of the City State through a yearly examination that supplies candidates for the administration of the City State. Selected for their physical aptitude and leadership qualities, they undergo an exhaustive ten-year training program, which is supplemented by at least a decade of real-world combat experience before they can assume the title of Polemarchos. By leading their troops from the front and inspiring them, the Polemarchoi have become emblematic of the martial prowess of the City States. This has led some unenlightened scholars from the north to translate the title of Polemarchos as "Warlord." However, the correct translation is "Lord of War."
