The Story
The Imperium of Man stands at the edge of catastrophe.
Following his recovery from grievous injuries, Warmaster Horus resumes command of the Emperor's armies and leads a campaign against the rebellious world of Isstvan III.
The Imperial forces quickly overwhelm the planet's defenders, apparently securing another victory for the Great Crusade.
However, Horus's true intentions are far darker.
Having secretly turned against the Emperor, the Warmaster begins eliminating those warriors within his own forces who might oppose his rebellion.
The world of Isstvan III becomes the stage for an act of betrayal that will forever change the Imperium.
As virus bombs rain down upon the planet, loyalist Space Marines are abandoned to die.
Those who survive the bombardment must fight against their former brothers in a desperate struggle for survival.
The Horus Heresy has begun.
The Betrayal of Horus
Horus Lupercal was once the Emperor's most trusted son and the greatest of his primarchs.
Appointed Warmaster during the Great Crusade, Horus commanded the Imperium's armies and carried the Emperor's vision of galactic unity across the stars.
But his corruption and growing ambition lead him to reject his father's authority.
In Galaxy in Flames, Horus begins putting his rebellion into motion, transforming his military power into a weapon against the Imperium itself.
Isstvan III – The First Great Betrayal
The events on Isstvan III represent one of the most infamous atrocities of the Horus Heresy.
Under the pretense of suppressing a planetary rebellion, Horus deploys Space Marines to the surface before unleashing a devastating virus bombardment.
The attack is intended to eliminate loyalist warriors who might resist the coming rebellion.
However, some survive the bombardment and prepare to make their final stand.
The resulting conflict pits Space Marine against Space Marine, shattering the bonds of brotherhood that once united the Legions.
Space Marines Against Their Brothers
One of the most devastating aspects of the Horus Heresy is the betrayal between warriors who once fought side by side.
The Space Marine Legions were created to serve the Emperor and conquer the galaxy in Humanity's name.
On Isstvan III, those same warriors become enemies.
Former comrades are forced to fight one another, with loyalty to the Emperor and obedience to their primarchs pulling the Legions apart.
Galaxy in Flames explores the personal and military consequences of this betrayal.
The Virus Bombardment
The destruction of Isstvan III is one of the defining moments of the early Horus Heresy.
Horus orders the use of devastating virus bombs against the planet, unleashing weapons capable of destroying entire populations.
The bombardment is intended to eliminate loyalist Space Marines and conceal the Warmaster's treachery.
Yet the surviving warriors refuse to surrender, forcing Horus's forces into a brutal confrontation.
The Opening Horus Heresy Trilogy
Galaxy in Flames concludes the first three novels of The Horus Heresy:
-
Horus Rising by Dan Abnett
-
False Gods by Graham McNeill
-
Galaxy in Flames by Ben Counter
Together, these books establish the origins of Horus's rebellion and the events that lead to the galaxy-spanning civil war.
Galaxy in Flames delivers the devastating conclusion to this opening storyline.
The Beginning of a Galactic Civil War
The events of Isstvan III mark the transition from secret conspiracy to open rebellion.
Horus's actions reveal the true scale of his ambitions and set the stage for the conflict that will eventually engulf the entire Imperium.
The Horus Heresy will divide the Space Marine Legions, devastate countless worlds, and ultimately bring war to Terra itself.
Galaxy in Flames captures the moment when these catastrophic events become unavoidable.
Loyalty, Betrayal & Sacrifice
At its heart, Galaxy in Flames explores the collapse of trust within the Imperium.
The novel examines:
-
Loyalty to the Emperor
-
Betrayal by trusted commanders
-
Brotherhood among Space Marines
-
The consequences of ambition
-
Sacrifice against overwhelming odds
-
The corruption of Horus
-
The beginning of civil war
These themes make the story an important part of the wider Horus Heresy narrative.
