The Panzerkampfwagen IV was one of the most widely used German medium tanks of the Second World War. First developed in the late 1930s, the Panzer IV served throughout the entire conflict in multiple variants. The Ausf. H, introduced in June 1943, became one of the most heavily produced and recognizable versions of the tank.

This 1/35 scale plastic model kit from Airfix recreates the Panzer IV Ausf. H (Mid Production), officially designated Sd. Kfz. 161/2. Compared with earlier variants, this model incorporated several modifications to improve battlefield survivability.

One of the most distinctive features of the Ausf. H was the application of Zimmerit paste on the vertical armor surfaces, designed to prevent the attachment of magnetic anti-tank mines. The turret roof armor was reinforced, increasing thickness from the earlier 10mm configuration to 16mm and 25mm sections.

Additional protection was added with 5mm hull skirts and 8mm turret skirts, which protected the tank against anti-tank rifles and shaped-charge weapons. These modifications also led to the removal of the hull side vision ports. Later production vehicles included triangular supports to strengthen the side skirts, which were prone to damage in combat.

With these enhancements, the tank’s weight increased to 25 tonnes, and its maximum cross-country speed was reduced to approximately 16 km/h.

The kit includes detailed plastic components that allow modelers to recreate this famous WWII armored vehicle in 1/35 scale. Once assembled and painted, it makes an excellent centerpiece for WWII armor collections and diorama scenes.
