New Necromunda vs Classic Necromunda: What's Changed?

New Necromunda vs Classic Necromunda: What's Changed?

Necromunda: Skirmish has launched a new era of gang warfare in the underhive.

But this is not a complete demolition and rebuild of Necromunda.

Games Workshop has taken the modern game that has been evolving for roughly nine years and cleaned it up, streamlined several cumbersome systems, expanded gang-building options, and reorganized how players access faction rules.

That distinction matters.

If you already play Necromunda, your collection has not suddenly become obsolete.

If you played years ago and found the game intimidating because of its enormous library of books, rules, campaign systems, equipment tables, and exceptions, the new edition is specifically trying to make the game easier to navigate.

And if by "classic Necromunda" you mean the original 1990s game, the difference is even larger. Modern Necromunda has evolved into a much deeper campaign-driven miniatures system with considerably more gangs, equipment, characters, vehicles, environments, and customization.

So what actually changed?

This guide compares the new Necromunda: Skirmish edition with the previous modern Necromunda rules, while also explaining where the game still retains the classic DNA that made Necromunda popular in the first place.

Browse gangs, characters, books, terrain, and the new edition in our Necromunda collection at Tistaminis.

The Short Answer

The new Necromunda is still recognizably Necromunda.

Alternating activations, campaign progression, injuries, territories, gang customization, equipment, and narrative chaos remain central to the game.

The biggest changes are about making that experience easier and faster to manage.

Gangers can now choose specialisations, equipment restrictions have been loosened, post-battle campaign actions have been reorganized, close combat has changed, armour saves are built directly into fighter profiles, Firepower dice are used less often, Bottle tests are streamlined, scenarios are easier to generate, and the new Underhive Journals expand gangs through more focused supplements.

In other words: less bookkeeping and rule hunting, without removing the campaign depth.

The Most Important Thing: This Is Still Necromunda

Games Workshop describes the new edition as bringing together years of updates and improvements into a cleaner system rather than replacing the game's foundation.

That is probably the best way to understand it.

Necromunda Still Revolves Around:

  • Small gangs of individual fighters
  • Alternating activations
  • Weapons and equipment
  • Injuries
  • Experience
  • Territories
  • Campaign progression
  • Trading and recruitment
  • Gang Tactics
  • Unpredictable narrative moments

If you enjoyed building a gang and watching individual fighters slowly develop reputations, injuries, grudges, equipment, and skills, that experience remains intact.

This Is Evolution, Not Replacement

The new edition is trying to remove friction around Necromunda's systems rather than turn the game into a simpler generic skirmish wargame.

CHANGE #1 Ordinary Gangers Matter More

This may be one of the most interesting changes in the new edition.

Previously, Leaders and Champions naturally attracted much of the attention because they had better characteristics, equipment access, and skill options.

Regular Gangers could sometimes feel like the background cast.

The new rules give ordinary fighters more personality immediately.

New Gangers Can Choose a Specialisation

When a Ganger is added to your roster, they can choose from specialisations such as:

  • Gunner
  • Scout
  • Medic
  • Other battlefield roles

There are eight options in total, and the specialisation provides a starting skill.

Why This Is Good

Your regular fighters begin developing an identity immediately.

Instead of:

"This is ganger number four."

You can have:

"This is the ganger who keeps everyone alive."

Or:

"This is our scout."

Or:

"This is the one carrying the serious gun."

That is exactly the sort of narrative development Necromunda should encourage.

CHANGE #2 Equipment Restrictions Are Looser

The new edition gives players more freedom when equipping fighters.

With specific exceptions, Leaders, Champions, Gangers, and Prospects can access weapons and equipment available to their gang or purchased through the Trading Post.

Why This Matters

Older gang-building systems could involve checking which specific fighter type was permitted to purchase which category of equipment.

The new approach makes customization more intuitive.

For Hobbyists, This Is Especially Good

Necromunda is one of Games Workshop's best games for converting miniatures.

More flexible equipment access means players have more freedom to build fighters around:

  • Cool weapon conversions
  • Narrative themes
  • Campaign rewards
  • Interesting bits
  • Specific battlefield roles

If converting gangs is one of your favourite parts of Necromunda, this is a welcome change.

CHANGE #3 Brutes and Hangers-On Are Easier to Include

The new gang-building rules also loosen restrictions around Brutes and Hangers-On.

You can include more of these unusual characters as long as they do not outnumber the other relevant fighters in your gang.

Why We Like This

Necromunda has accumulated an enormous range of:

  • Brutes
  • Pets
  • Hangers-On
  • Specialists
  • Oddball characters

These are some of the most characterful miniatures in the entire range.

Allowing players to use more of them helps gangs feel less standardized.

CHANGE #4 Close Combat Has Changed

Combat received several smaller adjustments designed to keep fights moving while creating new tactical considerations.

Combat Now Uses Initiative Order

That changes how fighters exchange attacks and places more emphasis on Initiative.

Non-Activating Fighters Are More Limited

A fighter who is not currently activating only makes one attack.

Why This Matters

Large, powerful fighters can now be more vulnerable when several opponents pile into them.

That makes weight of numbers more relevant.

Tactical Consequence

A huge Brute may still destroy an ordinary ganger in a straight fight.

But surrounding that Brute with several fighters can now create a much more meaningful advantage.

CHANGE #5 Firepower Dice Are Less Universal

The Firepower die remains part of Necromunda.

But you will not necessarily roll it every time someone fires a weapon.

The new edition reserves Firepower rolls mainly for:

  • Weapons firing large volumes of ammunition
  • Weapons prone to malfunction
  • Weapons where ammunition management is particularly relevant

Why This Helps

Routine shooting becomes quicker.

The Firepower die still exists where it adds tension, but it does not need to interrupt every basic ranged attack.

CHANGE #6 Fighters Now Have a Save Characteristic

This is one of the most immediately visible changes on the new fighter profiles.

Armour protection is now represented directly by a Save characteristic.

Previously

You often needed to remember or reference the fighter's equipment to determine their armour save.

Now

The basic Save appears directly on the fighter profile.

Cover, armour, and equipment can then modify it.

Why This Is Better

You spend less time asking:

"What armour is this fighter wearing again?"

and more time actually playing.

This Is a Perfect Example of the New Edition's Philosophy

The underlying concept has not disappeared.

The information is simply presented in a faster and more useful way.

CHANGE #7 Bottle Tests Are Faster

Bottling has always been an important part of Necromunda.

Gangs are not armies fighting to the last model.

Sometimes the sensible response to watching several friends get blasted off a gantry is to leave.

The new edition simplifies how those checks are resolved.

Instead of Repeated Individual Cool Checks

Bottle checks now use the highest Leadership characteristic among fighters on the battlefield.

The Result

  • Less repetitive rolling
  • Faster end-of-round resolution
  • Leadership becomes more important

CHANGE #8 Post-Battle Campaign Management Is Cleaner

This may be the most important improvement for campaign groups.

Necromunda's campaign depth is one of its greatest strengths.

It is also one of the areas where the game could become cumbersome.

The new edition reorganizes the post-battle and post-cycle sequences.

Fighters Can Now Perform Activities Such As:

  • Recovering from injuries
  • Working territories
  • Training for additional experience
  • Performing gang-specific activities

Why This Matters

The goal is not to remove campaign bookkeeping.

Bookkeeping is part of Necromunda's charm.

The goal is to make that bookkeeping clearer and faster so
