Konflikt '47 Japanese Forces: Why Now Is a Great Time to Start an Army

Konflikt ‘47 Japanese Forces: Why Now Is a Great Time to Start an Army

If you have been waiting for the right time to start a Konflikt ‘47 Japanese army, 2026 may be it. The Empire of Japan has always had one of the game’s most distinctive identities — combining recognizable Imperial Japanese infantry and armour with Rift-powered weapons, stealth technology, Ghost troops, and increasingly bizarre walkers. But for much of the game’s history, Japan felt like a faction with an excellent concept that had not yet received the same depth of modern plastic support as some of the European and American forces.

That is changing quickly. The 2026 release cycle has placed Japan directly into the spotlight, and the combination makes this an unusually good point to begin the faction. Browse starter armies, infantry, Ghost troops, Rift units, vehicles, walkers, and new releases in our Konflikt ‘47 collection at Tistaminis.

Why Start Konflikt ‘47 Japan in 2026?
  • New Ghost-themed units give the army a stronger unique identity
  • The Onryō Assault Walker expands the mechanical side of the range
  • The Ghost Infiltration Platoon lets Ghost units become structurally central, not just novelty additions
  • Updated army rules available through Warlord’s free living army lists
  • Bolt Action Imperial Japan models are officially compatible
  • Invasion Amerika places Japan near the centre of the current narrative
  • More units are already confirmed on the roadmap

Japan no longer feels like a faction you start primarily because you already own a historical army. It is increasingly one of the most interesting Konflikt ‘47 factions in its own right.

What Makes the Empire of Japan Different in Konflikt ‘47?

Konflikt ‘47 is an alternate-history wargame set in a Second World War that did not end in 1945. Rift technology has transformed the battlefield with walkers, powered armour, automated weapons, advanced energy weapons, and technology that borders on the supernatural. Japan approaches these developments differently from the other major powers — less about lining up the biggest tank, more about forcing the enemy to deal with threats appearing from unexpected places.

Japan’s Core Identity

Ambushes, infiltration, stealth, outflanking, fanatic infantry, and Rift units all reinforce a consistent tactical theme: you never quite know where the next problem is coming from.

Category Empire of Japan
General Style Aggressive infantry, ambushes, stealth and Rift technology
Infantry Strong and highly thematic
Rift Units Excellent variety and increasingly important
Walkers Growing rapidly with 2026 support
Ambush Play Excellent
Outflanking Excellent for Rift units
Order Dice Count Can trend lower in Rift-heavy builds
Beginner Friendly Good, with room for advanced tactics
Hobby Appeal Excellent mix of historical and weird-war models

The Four Core Japanese Army Rules

RULE Death Before Dishonour

Empire of Japan Infantry and Artillery units have the Fanatics special rule and automatically pass Morale Checks caused by being assaulted by enemy Vehicles. Japanese units can also re-roll failed Order Tests when attempting to Assault. Your infantry is difficult to intimidate — it provides a recognizable aggressive foundation before any of the stranger Rift technology enters the army.

RULE From Nowhere

Japanese infantry on Ambush can potentially charge enemies moving within 12 inches rather than the usual 6. Your opponent cannot treat an Ambushing squad as merely a shooting threat — it may suddenly become an assault threat. This makes terrain extremely important and rewards players who think about where the enemy will be forced to move next.

Beginner Lesson

Japan rewards players who think about where the enemy wants to move, not just where their own units should go. Ambush positions threaten areas — they do not need to trigger immediately to contribute.

RULE Shadow Work

If an Empire of Japan unit on an Ambush Order is already receiving Cover, its Cover Save improves further. The enemy must decide whether to advance into the threat or spend resources trying to dislodge it — a persistent pressure that synergizes naturally with dense terrain, Ghost forces, and defensive traps.

RULE Secrets of Iwo Jima

Japanese Rift units attempting an Outflanking Manoeuvre can begin arriving from Turn 2 rather than Turn 3 and do not suffer the normal Reserve order-test penalty. This pushes Japan well beyond a conventional Bolt Action army — an opponent focused entirely on the units directly in front of them may suddenly discover a Japanese Rift unit appearing where it is least convenient.

This Is One of Japan’s Most Important Strategic Advantages

Threatening side objectives, attacking rear units, forcing opponents to protect multiple board edges, and breaking static firing lines are all made easier by earlier, more reliable outflanking.

The 2026 Japanese Wave

The biggest reason to start Japan now is the rate at which the modern range is expanding. The August 2026 army-list update added several major new units and introduced the Ghost Infiltration Platoon as a new Special Platoon — which can replace a mandatory Assault Platoon during force construction. That is much more than simply adding another infantry squad. Ghost units can now become a structural part of your army.

New 2026 Additions

  • Kimura Tadaaki, Scourge of the Spirit Realm — named hero and focal model
  • Ghost Infiltration Platoon Commander — dedicated Ghost HQ
  • Shadow Warrior Squad — new stealth-oriented infantry option
  • Special Type Onryō Assault Walker — new Japanese walker; plastic kit pre-order scheduled November 2026, builds three versions
  • Ghost Infiltration Platoon — new Special Platoon letting Ghost units anchor a force

Additional units connected with the Invasion Amerika expansion are already confirmed as part of the ongoing roadmap.

Ghost Troops Are Becoming Japan’s Defining Feature

These are not simply soldiers wearing better camouflage. Rift technology allows Japanese Ghost forces to interact with the battlefield in ways conventional infantry cannot — stealth, infiltration, sudden redeployment, ambushes, appearing from unexpected positions, and disrupting enemy battle plans. This makes Japan feel genuinely different from simply playing Bolt Action with a few science-fiction models added.

The Ghost Attack Squad’s Bon Odori Active Rift Enhancement was also updated in August: the redeployment restriction was reduced, giving the squad much more practical room to reposition near enemy forces. The concept now reads on the table rather than existing mainly in the rules.

Can You Use Bolt Action Japanese Models?

Yes, with the appropriate army-building rules and agreement between players. The official Japanese army list specifically allows players to incorporate units from Bolt Action: Armies of Imperial Japan, Third Edition, treated as Late War units. Your existing collection can provide basic infantry, support weapons, vehicles, and artillery — and you can then gradually add Rift units without replacing anything.

Note that imported Bolt Action units retain Death Before Dishonour but do not receive every other Empire of Japan Konflikt ‘47 special rule, which helps keep genuinely Rift-powered units mechanically distinctive.

Excellent Upgrade Path

You do not need to replace a historical Japanese army. Start with familiar infantry and progressively make the force stranger, one Rift unit at a time.

Three Ways to Build a Japanese Army

1. Historical Core + Rift Support

Japanese infantry, historical support weapons, conventional armour, one or two Rift units, and a walker or Ghost squad. The easiest transition for Bolt Action players — a recognizable WWII force with weird-war elements added gradually as you learn the system.

2. Ghost Infiltration Force

Ghost Infiltration Platoon, Ghost Attack Squads, Shadow Warriors, Ghost commanders, and the Onryō Assault Walker. This is the army for players who want Japan to feel as different from Bolt Action as possible. The 2026 updates make this a structurally coherent force rather than a collection of novelty units.

3. Rift-Heavy Mechanized Force

Advanced armour, walker technology, armoured infantry, and fewer but more powerful units. Fewer Order Dice, but each unit is individually much harder to ignore. The Onryō makes this direction even more attractive.

For beginners: start with option 1. Learn Orders, Ambush, Assaults, and Movement through familiar infantry and support units. Add one Ghost unit and one Rift weapon — then decide which direction interests you most.

Watch Your Order Dice Count

Warlord’s army-list commentary notes that Japanese Rift weapons can be relatively expensive, which can result in fewer activations than opposing armies. Do not sacrifice your entire Order Dice count to fit every weird weapon into one list. Conventional infantry still holds objectives.

Why the Living Army Lists Matter

Konflikt ‘47 uses free living army-list PDFs. As new Japanese models release, Warlord updates the list with new units, platoons, points adjustments, and rules clarifications. For a faction currently receiving substantial new support, you do not need to wait for a new faction book before using the latest releases.

Painting the Japanese Army

The visual contrast across the army is one of its biggest hobby advantages. In the same collection you can paint historical khaki uniforms and wood tones on infantry, pale blue or spectral green Ghost effects on Rift troops, and war-worn chipped metal with bright Rift energy on walkers. The rule of thumb: keep the historical foundation relatively muted and let the Rift elements provide the colour contrast. A Ghost unit with mostly conventional uniform tones and subtle glowing effects often reads better than one painted entirely in supernatural colours.

Can I use Bolt Action Japanese miniatures in Konflikt ‘47?

Yes. The official Japanese army list provides rules for incorporating appropriate Bolt Action: Armies of Imperial Japan units into a Konflikt ‘47 force, subject to normal army-building guidance.

What are Japanese Ghost troops?

Ghost troops are Rift-enhanced Japanese units built around stealth, infiltration, unusual movement, and redeployment mechanics. They are becoming one of the defining features of the 2026 Japanese range.

What is the Ghost Infiltration Platoon?

A new Special Platoon added in August 2026. It allows Ghost units to become a much more central part of the force and can replace a mandatory Assault Platoon during force construction.

Final Verdict: Is Now a Good Time to Start Konflikt ‘47 Japan?

Yes — in fact, this may be the most interesting point yet to begin an Empire of Japan army. Death Before Dishonour keeps infantry aggressive. From Nowhere makes Ambush positions dangerous. Shadow Work reinforces stealth. Secrets of Iwo Jima turns Rift units into unusually effective flankers. And the newest releases are pushing all of those mechanics much further with dedicated Ghost platoons, new infantry, a named Hero, and a major new walker.

For an existing Bolt Action Japanese player the decision is especially easy, because much of your collection can already form the conventional side of the force. For a completely new player, the faction now offers a clear path from historical warfare into increasingly bizarre weird-war technology — start with infantry, add Ghosts, add Rift weapons, add walkers, and decide exactly how strange you want your version of 1947 to become.
