Spotlight: Marvel Crisis Protocol
Marvel Crisis Protocol is a tabletop hobby miniatures game set in the Marvel Universe. Players assemble, paint, and collect an ever expanding line of highly detailed plastic miniatures representing iconic Marvel characters. Players choose characters from their collections to form their own Marvel inspired dream team and then pit their chosen forces against each other on an interactive tabletop where the very terrain itself can be thrown, crashed into, and destroyed during the super powered showdown.
For a comic book fan like myself, when this game launched a year ago I was immediately drawn in. Seeing models of my favourite Marvel characters that I was able to paint and then have them duke it out on the tabletop, what’s not to like?!
The gameplay system is very intuitive and casual gamer friendly. There aren’t a ton of complex mechanics to slow down your games. It feels like all the rules are very much in the spirit of what you would expect your chosen heroes to actually be like if they were real flesh and blood. So having Spider-Man crawl up a building effortlessly to save a civilian from danger, while having his arch nemesis Doctor Octopus chasing after him happens pretty freely and without much thought. All of the game mechanics are simple enough to make the game fluid, while having enough depth and explanation to give the Marvel Universe life on the tabletop.
What’s even more fun is you can hand pick your team of heroes as you wish. While there are benefits of having only Avengers in your team, there is nothing stopping you from having Ultron fight alongside them! This freedom really adds a personal aspect to collecting and fielding your miniatures.
These models are sculpted in a 35mm scale. So they might be just a touch larger than most other wargames you are familiar with. This allows for some very enjoyable building and painting. You can get into those fun areas of these miniatures and have fun detailing and adding your favourite designs to the costumes of your team of heroes.
Overall, this game has not disappointed one bit, and every new release adds even more fun to the already stellar game system. This game is just celebrating it's one year anniversary and I can hardly wait to see what there is in store for the future!
