Victory at Sea: Scharnhorst
The Scharnhorst, lead ship of her class, was a formidable German capital ship, launched in October 1936. Armed with nine 28cm C/34 guns in three triple turrets, she was originally designed to be up-gunned to 38cm guns, though this modification was never carried out.
A Raider of the Atlantic
Throughout the early years of World War II, Scharnhorst and her sister ship, Gneisenau, became notorious for their commerce raiding operations against British merchant shipping in the Atlantic. One of her early victories came in November 1939, when she sank HMS Rawalpindi.
A Formidable Opponent
Scharnhorst played a key role in the invasion of Norway, achieving some of the longest-range gunfire hits in naval history. She sank the battlecruiser HMS Renown and the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious, along with her escorting destroyers.
The Battle of the North Cape
In early 1943, Scharnhorst joined Tirpitz in Norway, intending to disrupt Allied convoys to the Soviet Union. However, she was intercepted by the Royal Navy and engaged in the Battle of the North Cape. Facing overwhelming firepower from HMS Duke of York and her escorts, Scharnhorst was ultimately sunk.
