Hail Caesar Macedonian Command 2
Macedonian phalangites were the backbone of the military forces under Philip II of Macedon and his son, Alexander the Great, during the 4th century BCE. These infantry soldiers were integral to the Macedonian phalanx, a formidable military formation renowned for its discipline and effectiveness in battle.
Phalangites were armed with the sarissa, a long pike measuring approximately 18 to 22 feet, which allowed them to engage enemies at a distance and maintain a solid defensive line. They wore lighter armor than traditional hoplites, typically including a helmet, a small shield, and a cuirass, to ensure greater mobility.
The phalangites' primary role was to form a dense, impenetrable wall of spears that could repel enemy charges and hold the line, creating opportunities for the Macedonian cavalry and more flexible troops to outflank and overwhelm opponents. The effectiveness of the Macedonian phalanx, spearheaded by the phalangites, played a crucial role in Alexander's conquests, helping to establish one of the largest empires in ancient history.
