Victory at Sea: German Light Cruiser Köln
The Köln was the third and final ship of the Königsberg-class light cruisers, serving from 1929 to 1945 under both the Reichsmarine and Kriegsmarine. Initially a training vessel in the 1930s, she transitioned to active combat roles following the outbreak of World War II, conducting operations in the North Sea.
Combat History
- Took part in Operation Weserübung, the German invasion of Norway, surviving the attack on Bergen, unlike her sister ships.
- In 1942, Köln was experimentally outfitted with a Flettner FI 282 helicopter, marking an early attempt at shipborne rotary-wing aircraft use.
- Returned to Norway, though she saw little action before redeploying to Germany in 1945.
- Sunk in Wilhelmshaven by American bombers in March 1945, but remained on an even keel, allowing her above-water turrets to provide fire support for German defenders until the war's end in May 1945.
