The widespread use of the helicopter was the most significant tactical advancement of the Vietnam War. The UH-1 was by far the most important aircraft to the American forces serving in Vietnam and it quickly became an icon of the Vietnam War. The Huey fulfilled three roles during the conflict – as Slicks (troop transports) Gunships (armed) or Dustoffs (medical evacuation). At the peak of the American involvement, some 4,000 helicopters were in use by various branches the armed force. Of these, the UH-1 Huey made up two thirds of this total.
