Hail Caesar Saxon Leaders - Battle Of Stamford Bridge

Morcar of Northumbria was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman who became the Earl of Northumbria in the mid-11th century. He succeeded Tostig Godwinson in 1065 after a rebellion by the Northumbrian nobility. Morcar, along with his brother Edwin, Earl of Mercia, played a significant role in the political landscape during the Norman Conquest of England. They initially supported Harold Godwinson's claim to the throne but later submitted to William the Conqueror after Harold's defeat at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Despite this submission, Morcar later joined several rebellions against Norman rule, including the revolt of the earls in 1071. Eventually, he was captured by William's forces and imprisoned for the rest of his life, marking the end of his influence in the turbulent period of England's transition from Anglo-Saxon to Norman rule.

Edwin of Mercia was a prominent Anglo-Saxon nobleman in the 11th century, serving as the Earl of Mercia from around 1062 until his death in 1071. He was the son of Ælfgar, the previous earl, and brother to Morcar, Earl of Northumbria. Edwin played a crucial role during the tumultuous period leading up to and following the Norman Conquest of England. He initially supported Harold Godwinson's claim to the English throne but later submitted to William the Conqueror after Harold's defeat at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Despite this, Edwin and his brother Morcar soon became disillusioned with Norman rule and joined multiple uprisings against William. Their resistance culminated in the rebellion of 1071, after which Edwin was betrayed and killed by his own men while attempting to flee from Norman forces. Edwin's death marked the end of significant Anglo-Saxon resistance in Mercia and solidified Norman control over England.

Tostig Godwinson was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman and the Earl of Northumbria from 1055 to 1065. The third son of the powerful Earl Godwin of Wessex, Tostig was a key figure in the turbulent politics of 11th-century England. His rule in Northumbria was marked by harsh governance, which led to a rebellion by his own subjects in 1065. The rebellion forced King Edward the Confessor to exile Tostig and replace him with Morcar.

In 1066, Tostig allied with King Harald Hardrada of Norway and invaded England in an attempt to seize the throne from his brother, Harold Godwinson, who had become king after Edward's death. Tostig and Hardrada were initially successful, but their campaign ended at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, where both were defeated and killed by Harold's forces. This battle significantly weakened Harold's army, contributing to his later defeat by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings. Tostig's actions and alliances were pivotal in the events leading to the Norman Conquest of England.
