Halloween Sets
It seems to be tradition for Trading Card Game companies to release spooky Halloween themed sets in the late October season, a tradition welcomed by fans every year! In this article we look at some recent examples of successful & creative Halloween releases in the TCG world.
Pokemon's Trick or Trade
A clever way to bring Pokémon fun and excitement on the spookiest night of the year - with a bundle of BOOster packs! Inside a Trick Or Trade package you’ll find 50 mini packs, each containing three colorful cards from the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
All of the cards in the set are reprints and each card features a special Pikachu pumpkin stamp in the corner of the artwork. Fan favourites like Gengar, Haunter and Gastly appropriately make an appearance here along with other Psychic type Pokemon!
MetaZoo's Trick No Treat Mask Set & Nightfall
Trick No Treat was MetaZoo's 2022 Halloween holiday release. This mini-set comprises 14 main set cards and randomly includes second editions of the 5 Halloween 2021 release cards.
These mini-sets were packaged in bags, each containing one of five unique face masks and 20 single-card booster packs.
A total of 10,000 bags were made available, and following the tradition of most limited MetaZoo releases, they sold out on the launch day. All the cards within this mini-set are available in full holo, with three of them offered in both full holo and non-holo versions, while the remaining eleven cards are available in full holo, reverse holo, and non-holo variants.
Also of note is MetaZoo's second core set NIGHTFALL, released in October 2021. This was a fan favourite Dark themed set featuring some classic Halloween staples like the Headless Horseman card, as well as the Boogeyman, Grim Reaper and Wendigo! No shortage of terrifying creatures of the night in this set.
This year's MetaZoo Halloween release is a huge collab with Sanrio - KUROMI'S CRYPTID CARNIVAL! Available for pre-order now on our website.
Innistrad: Midnight Hunt
In September 2021 Wizards of the Coast announced a new spooky Magic: The Gathering set, to launch for both tabletop and MTG: Arena. Innistrad: Midnight Hunt was this werewolf inspired horror set, that introduces new darker themed cards and brings back an old favourite from sets past.
The narrative of this set once again unfolds in the town of Innistrad, where the Harvesttide Festival is on the horizon. As the festival approaches, so do the night's horrors, and the responsibility falls upon the Planeswalker Arlinn Kord to safeguard the townsfolk. Innistrad: Midnight Hunt introduces a wealth of new cards with eerie designs and resurrects the Flashback mechanic.
Flashback is a fitting mechanic to return in this spooky set as it's a well-known graveyard mechanic in MTG. For those unfamiliar with it, Flashback enables players to cast spells from cards in the graveyard. This mechanic was initially introduced in the original Innistrad MTG deck.
Midnight Hunt also features 19 new double-faced werewolf cards that utilize Daybound and Nightbound mechanics, each side possessing its unique abilities and accompanied by gothic-inspired artwork. Additionally, the set introduces Eternal Night Legends, new variants of Land cards, and Equinox cards inspired by folk horror themes.
